July Repairs: Projectors, Printers, Parasols and Plenty of Mending

Our July repair café took place on Saturday 25th July at Tregony Village Hall, with another busy afternoon of repairs, investigations, careful mending and practical advice.

There is no café in August, so this was our last session before the September break. As usual, the afternoon showed the range of things people bring through the door: household electricals, garden tools, clothing, bags, clocks, small appliances and the odd item that does not fit neatly into any category.

What came through the door

Among the items brought in this month were a printer, slide projector, radiator, vacuum cleaner, food mixer, strimmer, tablet, dashcam, parasol, chair, china dish, pan lid, clocks, lamps, bags, dresses, tops, trousers and other textile repairs.

Some items were fixed on the day. A printer was repaired, and an oil-filled radiator was brought back into use after work on a thermal cutout. A chair was made sturdy again with a replacement stretcher and re-glued joints, a china dish had a broken piece glued back into place, and a pan lid had its knob reattached. There was also useful progress on a parasol repair, with careful gluing and clamping to give it another chance of service.

Diagnoses are useful too

Not everything can be finished in a two-hour session, but a diagnosis can still be a very useful result.

A slide projector is still in progress with one of our volunteers. A Dyson vacuum cleaner was investigated and diagnosed with a faulty hose; a replacement has been ordered, so we hope that can be completed at a future café. A food mixer also appears likely to need new motor brushes, and may return in September.

Other items, including a tablet, dashcam and strimmer, could not be fixed this time. Even when the answer is “not today”, it is still better to have a clearer idea of the problem than simply send something straight to waste.

Textiles and take-home mending

The textile table was busy again. Some mending was completed on the day, including a cardigan repair, while other jobs were taken home by volunteers for more careful work.

This month’s textile pile included trousers, tops, jumpers, dresses, a bag zip and other clothing repairs. These quiet fixes are some of the most useful work we do: a seam, hem, zip or small patch can keep a favourite item in use for much longer.

Thank you to everyone who came along, brought something in, volunteered at a repair table, welcomed visitors, made tea, filled in forms, took photos or helped keep the afternoon running smoothly.

We are always glad to hear from new volunteers. You do not have to be an expert repairer: sewing, electrical and mechanical skills are all welcome, but so are people who can help with greeting visitors, making tea, taking photos, filling in forms, or keeping the afternoon friendly and organised.

There is no Repair Café in August. Our next repair café is on Saturday 26th September, 1–3pm at Tregony Village Hall. Bring along something broken and we will see what we can do. Repairs are not guaranteed, but we will always try to give useful, safe advice.
